Where vision becomes a reality.
We are passionate about outdoor living. Our designers specialize in transforming backyards from the weekend chore into a weekend getaway. We take the time to listen, get to know your lifestyle, and understand what features are important to you. Our passion inspired the creation of Surroundings, The Store for Outdoor Living. If you haven’t visited, you owe it to yourself to see how far outdoor living products for today’s families and businesses have evolved. Our Mill Brothers Designers reside at the store, and are ready to help you create an outdoor space that is truly an extension of your home.
At Mill Brothers, our niche is to create and provide unique outdoor living areas that meet your needs in Fort Collins. Our definition of an outdoor space is something with at least one of the following elements:
It all starts with the patio…Like the foundation of a home, all the desired uses must be planned to ensure it is sized correctly. Most homes’ existing patios or decks are undersized for today’s outdoor living. Space planning occurs first to determine which elements will be incorporated into a patio. These could include any or all of the following: an outdoor kitchen or cooking area, dining area, deep seating fire conversation area, circulation patterns, and orientation for sun/shade patterns and predominant winds. Once size and use is determined, patio surfacing is decided upon. Some of the most common are flagstone patios and brick paver patios, but if you have a specific idea in mind we can probably make it work. With so many materials and options, having experts in patio design is priceless when it comes to the overall functionality of your outdoor space.
With our on-staff architectural designer, we are able to design and install room additions, shade structures–including pavilions, covered patios, free standing or attached pergolas, and retractable or stationary glass walls to enclose a patio from the untimely wind or rain event. In addition, we have many other shade systems, retractable awnings, shade sails, outdoor drapery, vertical retractable sun shades and bug screens.
With the addition of an outdoor kitchen, your outdoor paradise is born. Just like the indoor kitchen, it becomes a focal point and gathering place. It ignites the conversations of friends and family, becoming the true gathering spot for memories. We are experts at designing and installing custom outdoor kitchens. Some are simple–others, depending on the features desired, are even more elaborate than indoor kitchens. With many types of cabinetry to choose from, our designers can show you all the choices available that work with your homes architecture and personal preference. Our designers are fully trained and know the features of different grills, smokers, burners, doors, drawers and storage options, refrigeration, beer taps, and bar stations. The best part is we can give you a hands on demonstrations of all the unique features of each brand we carry at Surroundings, The Store for Outdoor Living. If you are looking for outdoor kitchens in Colorado, we more than have you covered.
Fireplaces and Fire Features
Remember that feeling as a kid sitting around the fire? Introducing a fire pit or other fire feature into your outside space will have you feeling like a kid again. Our designers create fire features that calm the soul and make every evening on the patio filled with warmth, rejuvenation, and hopefully some delicious s’mores. With fireplaces, fire pits, and custom fire features incorporated into your space, lasting memories are sure to be made. With lightweight fireplaces that can be placed upon a deck to fire pans incorporated into dining tables, we are sure to find a way to bring that feeling back.
At Mill Brothers we have endeavored to become experts in our field. In addition to our outdoor living design and construction fundamental elements, our services include:

Based out of Fort Collins, Mill Brothers provides outdoor living solutions for homes big and small including outdoor kitchens, awnings, decks and much more.
Every project begins the same way:
In Store Consultation
Our designers reside in Surroundings, The Store For Outdoor Living in Fort Collins, CO. This unique partnership with Surroundings offers a showroom that features every product and accessory that can be utilized in creating an outdoor space. Designers are on staff Monday through Saturday, and no appointments are needed to seek advice and develop a relationship.
If a relationship is established and you would like to move forward with a designer, a time will be scheduled to meet at your home and further the conversation of identifying the features you and your family desire. With this collaboration of your ideas and your homes features, your designer will present a design estimate of time it will take to develop conceptual plans. Our designers are professional, creative people and charge a reasonable rate to develop and refine the plans to a conceptual level. You do not owe any more than the initial design fee, even for revisions. It’s important also to note that our designers are not commission based.
It’s important at this step to identify some budget parameters before your designer starts drawing. Our designers have a general idea of what costs might be for your improvements and will share those with you to see if it aligns with your cost perception. We want to design within your current budget expectation, but we advocate the creation of a master plan and phasing the project over time if there are budget concerns. We know what provisions will need to be made in the first phase, so future work can be done as cost effectively as possible, and done without damaging work previously installed.
Conceptual plan review
Once the design agreement has been executed, your designer will create a master plan and will make an appointment to meet at Surroundings to review plans and present material selections incorporated into the plan. Your designer will have created a preliminary estimate to ensure it is in line with discussed budgets.
Final plan review
Any revisions from the conceptual plan will be incorporated into the final plan and all details of materials, finishes, appliances, landscape plantings, enhancements, irrigation, and lighting, among anything else, will be noted on the plan or as a supplement attachment. Final pricing will be provided and any further questions will be addressed.
As part of the final plan review meeting, your designer will have a contract prepared and a tentative start date for your project. Your designer will then prepare construction documents for permitting, engineering, and HOA approval if required. Don’t worry; we do all the permitting and submittals as part of our service.
Craftsmanship that considers every detail.
Once we’ve finalized the design for your property, we’ll work to bring your vision to life with the same first-class service you’ve experienced during the design phase.
Our professional crews respect your time, your property, and your neighbors. Along with delivering beautiful surroundings, we believe in providing the best possible experience. We arrive on time, ready to go work for you. You’ll always know exactly what’s going on with your project, the progress we’ve made, next steps, and up-to-date schedules. If a problem arises, we promise to take care of it immediately. And when we leave your yard, you can count on it being clean.
Your property is always treated as if it were our own. This sense of ownership enables us to not only meet, but exceed, your every expectation for high-quality, creative outdoor living.
